Publisher's typographic cover.
The first separate publication. The story was first printed in the January issue of the journal "Novy mir" in 1963. To avoid censorship obstacles, the author's original title "A Village Can't Be Without a Righteous Man" was changed at the request of the editorial board. For the same reason, the time setting in the story was changed by A. Solzhenitsyn from 1956 to 1953. Andrei Sinyavsky referred to this work as the "foundational piece" of all Russian "village literature."
