On February 26 (March 10), 1845, in St. Petersburg, a son named Alexander was born to Grand Duke Alexander Nikolaevich and his wife Maria Alexandrovna. This Alexander would become the future Russian Emperor Alexander III, the grandson of Nicholas I, and the father of the last Russian monarch, Nicholas II.
