500700
Set of two polychrome enamelled porcelain groups depicting pugs playfully wrestling on a naturalistic rocky mound. Both compositions derive from the celebrated 18th-century model created by Johann Joachim Kändler and reflect the enduring success of this design at the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. The first group, dating from the 19th century, comprises three collarless pugs, finely modelled with remarkable naturalism. The base is highlighted with a gilt line. The second group, dating from the second half of the 20th century, depicts three pugs wearing blue collars heightened with gilt and applied bells. The finely painted decoration emphasises the subtle colouring of the animals’ coats. Marks: underglaze blue crossed swords Meissen factory mark on both groups. The 19th-century group bears the incised 18th-century model number ‘F 186’, corresponding to the original composition by Johann Joachim Kändler and August Ringler, together with the modeller’s number ‘29’. The 20th-century group bears the incised model number ‘78836’, corresponding to the modern edition of model ‘F 186’, and workshop number ‘616’. 8 × 16.5 cm (each) Condition: the 19th-century group in very good condition, with minor wear to the gilt decoration; the 20th-century group in very good condition. This lot is of particular interest to collectors, bringing together two versions of the same iconic model by Johann Joachim Kändler, produced at different periods by the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. It offers a rare opportunity to appreciate the evolution of the porcelain body, craftsmanship and decorative style from the 19th century to the modern era.
