set of five polychrome enamelled porcelain figurines depicting pugs in various poses, including seated, alert and scratching. Four figures wear blue collars with applied gilt bells, while one has a plain collar. Finely modelled and painted, with particularly expressive features and a naturalistic rendering of the coats. 19th-century casts after the celebrated 18th-century models created by Johann Joachim Kändler and Peter Reinicke for the Meissen Porcelain Manufactory. The model depicting a scratching pug is a particularly rare example. Marks: underglaze blue crossed swords Meissen factory mark, incised model numbers: ‘861’ (model Peter Reinicke, 1747) on two figures; ‘799’ (model Johann Joachim Kändler); ‘952’ (model Johann Joachim Kändler, 1737), the latter also with red-painted painter’s numeral ‘540’, one figure with a partially erased model number and incised modeller’s mark ‘A’ (Bossierer).
