Karl August Gan (1836-1899) a fondé en 1873 à Saint-Pétersbourg la société ‘K.Gan’, qui possédait un atelier de production d'objets en or et en diamant. Rare, naturel et précieux, le bois d’amourette pare les créations de Van Cleef & Arpels depuis le début du 20ème siècle. Apprécié pour sa robe mouchetée aux reflets roux, il véhicule également une symbolique de chance à laquelle la Maison est particulièrement attachée. En 2012 la Maison met en lumière cette matière porte-bonheur à la faveur d’une heureuse découverte. En effet, dans le secret du 22, place Vendôme, son adresse historique, dormait un trésor insoupçonné: des planches de bois d’amourette en parfait état, acquises il y a plus de vingt-cinq ans par le neveu d’Estelle Arpels, Jacques Arpels. Attentive aux signes de la chance, la Maison décide alors d’offrir une nouvelle vie à ces précieuses planches, à travers une édition limitée d’exception. Cinq modèles Alhambra Vintage numérotés sont créés pour l’occasion dont ce sautoir. signed Cartier Sterling, signed Alfredo Sciarrotta (silversmith at Cartier NY in the 1950s) Height 7.2 cm, total weight 163 Alfredo Sciarrotta designed handmade items of silver for Cartier NY in the 1950s. An Italian-American born in in Rossano, Calabria, Italy, Alfredo Sciarrotta was a silversmith and expert in undersea weapons. He studied mechanical engineering, and in the years leading up to the War II, he worked at a munitions factory. He developed an expertise in the field of undersea weapons and enabled his acquisition as an asset by the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in 1943. His former mentor Carlo Colossi had pioneered the magnetic torpedo exploder for the Germans during the war. To protect the secret hardware for the Allied war effort, Sciarrotta and a team of scientists and engineers were smuggled out of Italy with weapon-related hardware and tools. After the fall of Italy to the allies, Sciarrotta continued to provide valuable insight and intel to the U.S. Navy. As a reward for his service to the United States, the government offered Sciarrotta a permanent position at the Naval Torpedo Station. However, he decided to follow his artistic interests and develop of his craft, creating art objects of copper, brass and eventually sterling silver. His designs became known as “The Wedding Gift of Philadelphia and Newport” and he was often referred to as the «Modern Cellini’. Sciarrotta’s work was commissioned for gifts presented by the City of Newport to visiting dignitaries, including President Eisenhower, the Italian President Giovanni Gronchi, fighter Rocky Marciano,[2] and Mayor Delmas of Antibes, France in 1962.

Original fitted Cartier case. An item of status, this elegant Champagne swizzle from circa 1927 has an Art deco appeal and is an object that still could be used. Initially such swizzle stands were popular in the US in the 1930s to remove bubbles from sparkling wines. Art Deco style, first called Modern Style, was the major artistic movement of the 1920s and was led by Cartier Paris with its beautiful creations. Elegant and geometric, rich in decoration, with use of hard stones such as rock crystal or onyx is distinctive of this period and ensured Cartier public interest.
