Vintage photograph with autograph signatures «Elizabeth» and «Philip» in the bottom margin. Gelatin silver print. 27 x 18.5 cm On 20 November 1947, in the post-World War II period, the future Queen Elizabeth II, 21 years old, married the future Prince Philip, 26 years old, in Westminster Abbey. A marriage for which the young groom, born Prince of Greece and Denmark, renounced his Greek and Danish titles and converted from Greek Orthodoxy to Anglicanism. On the eve and morning of the wedding, he received the predicate of Royal Highness from his father-in-law, King George VI, and the title Duke of Edinburgh, Earl of Merioneth and Baron Greenwich. Over a million Britons lined the streets of London to celebrate this historic day for their country. This exceptional ceremony, filmed and broadcasted by the BBC, which was allowed into Westminster Abbey for the first time, will be transmitted worldwide. Princess Elizabeth’s wedding dress was designed by Sir Norman Hartnell, embroidered with floral motifs, crystals and 10,000 seed pearls, and the full court train of silk tulle measures just over 4 meters. Hartnell cited Botticelli’s famous painting «Primavera», which symbolises the arrival of spring, as his inspiration for the design. Prince Philip was wearing the Royal Navy military uniform.
