Born in Nakhichevan-on-Don into an Armenian merchant family, he spent almost all his life in Moscow. The Armenian artist enjoyed painting etudes of the Volga.
He studied at the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture (1883-1890) under I. Levitan, V.E. Makovsky, A.K. Savrasov, and was friends with K. Korovin.
