Avar village of Salta in Nagorno Dagestan became the site of one of the longest and bloodiest battles of the Caucasian War. From July 25 to September 15, 1847 10000th detachment of General Vorontsov laid siege to the fortress, with the result that it was stormed and completely destroyed.
In 1884 Franz Roubaud made a trip to the Caucasus, collecting materials for a series of paintings from the history of the Caucasian wars of the Tiflis ‘Temple of Glory.’ In 1897 he created a painting ‘Storming of the village of Salta’ (Dagestan State Museum of Art in Makhachkala)
