Victor Emmanuel III succeeded his father, Umberto I, after the latter’s assassination in 1900.
Benito Mussolini, a member of the Italian Parliament, led a fascist march on Rome in 1922. When the Cabinet resigned, Victor Emmanuel asked Mussolini to form a ministry. Mussolini himself appointed a number of ministries. He changed the electoral law to ensure Fascist control of the government and in 1925 he established a dictatorship.
