RICHARD (LOETZ GLASSWORKS) TAPERING CAMEO GLASS VASE WITH ELONGATED NECK, CIRCA 1920–1925

Lot 369
350450
important blown multi-layer cameo glass vase of tapering form with a slender, slightly flared neck, resting on a rounded foot. The continuous acid-etched cameo decoration depicts a wooded lakeside landscape of Central Europe dominated by a fortified house with a square tower. The dark brown and jet-black decoration stands out dramatically against a satin opalescent ground with rich orange and amber shading, creating a striking sense of depth. Layered cameo glass signed ‘Richard’ (in relief at the base of the decoration) H. 46 cm Although bearing the signature Richard, this vase was produced by the renowned Austrian glassworks Johann Loetz Witwe of Klostermühle, Bohemia (now the Czech Republic). During the 1920s, the Loetz factory introduced the Richard brand for the French export market, drawing inspiration from the success of the École de Nancy, particularly the works of Émile Gallé and Daum. These acid-etched layered glass pieces are distinguished by their bold colour contrasts—typically orange and black—and by landscapes inspired by Central Europe and the Mediterranean. They elegantly illustrate the transition from the naturalism of the late Art Nouveau period to the emerging aesthetic of Art Deco.
