‘THE LOVERS UNDER THE OAK TREE’ PORCELAIN GROUP MEISSEN, CIRCA 1950–1970
Lot 310
200400
group in polychrome enamelled porcelain with gilt highlights, on an oval textured base decorated with applied florets. The composition, of baroque inspiration, depicts a couple of lovers seated in an intimate embrace at the foot of a large oak tree with relief-moulded acorns. The young man, dressed in an ochre jacket and violet breeches, supports his companion wearing a blue bodice and a voluminous white dress richly decorated with hand-painted floral bouquets. The model is distinguished by the quality of its modelling, the refinement of the vegetal decoration, and the expressiveness of the faces. High-quality re-edition after an 18th-century model attributed to Johann Joachim Kändler (1706–1775).
Marks: Meissen factory mark ‘crossed swords’ in underglaze blue, model number ‘73082’ (modern equivalent of the historical form ‘D 95’) incised in the paste, workshop modeller’s number ‘126 K’.
