Gertsena: [In 10 vols.]. Vol. 6-10). Five volumes in period full buckram binding. In good condition. Owner's marks on title pages. A prohibited edition. The most significant literary work of A.I. Herzen – his autobiography ‘Byloe i dumy’ (‘My Past and Thoughts’), published as part of the first posthumous collected works. To the Russian reader, the Geneva collection mostly remained unknown. Herzen's works continued to be strictly and unconditionally prohibited in Tsarist Russia for a long time. Even in the 1890s, when the first Russian collected works of Herzen were conceived, it was not permitted by the authorities, and it took more than 10 years to obtain the right to publish it. It was finally released in 1905 in 7 volumes with significant censorship omissions and distortions. The publication of Herzen's works, free from censorship interference, became possible only after the Revolution.
