We are grateful to Roberto Troubetzkoy for providing additional information on the present sculpture.
This sculpture depicts the famous racehorse Crapom, owned by Mario Crespi of Corriere della Sera and ridden by the equally renowned jockey Paolo Caprioli, winner of the 1933 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in Paris. Paolo Troubetzkoy probably drew inspiration from a photograph taken at Longchamp.
The whereabouts of the original are currently unknown, although several replicas are known. The Museo del Paesaggio preserves the plaster model, inventory no. T 28, which is unsigned.
The history of the horse and its jockey has been thoroughly researched by Dr Elisabetta Giordani in her book ‘Identità Rivelate – Personaggi ritratti da Paolo Troubetzkoy’.
