Nikolai Ulyanov (1875–1949) was a Russian painter, graphic artist, stage designer and writer. One of the foremost pupils of Valentin Serov, he established himself as an accomplished portraitist and collaborated with both Konstantin Stanislavsky and Vsevolod Meyerhold on theatre productions. His work reflects the influence of Art Nouveau, Cubism, Art Deco and Neoclassicism. Among his best-known works are the graphic series Pushkin in Life, the painting A. Pushkin and N. Goncharova before the Mirror at the Imperial Ball, and K.S. Stanislavsky at Work (1947; Tretyakov Gallery), for which he was awarded the Stalin Prize.
