Viktor Markovich Midler (1888–1979) studied at the Odessa Higher School of Art under Gennady Ladyzhensky and Kyriak Kostandi between 1908 and 1913, before continuing his artistic training in Moscow in the studios of Alexander Kuprin, Ilya Mashkov and Robert Falk. He exhibited from 1917 and was a member of the artists’ group Four Arts between 1925 and 1927. Following a trip to France in 1927, he developed a diverse body of work encompassing the celebrated Samarkand cycle, Parisian landscapes, portraits and later urban and landscape views.
