G. N. Gorelov studied at the Penza School of Art from 1898 to 1903, and at the Imperial Academy of Arts in St. Petersburg, where he studied in Ilya Repin’s studio and under Pavel Chistyakov and Franz Roubaud. The formation of Gorelov’s artistic interests as a historical painter took place during his years at the Academy. After graduating, he undertook a scholarship-funded study trip to Germany, France and Italy in 1911.
In 1914, he began teaching at the Kharkiv Art School, later moving to the Moscow School of Art in Memory of 1905. Upon returning to Moscow in 1915, he devoted himself to monumental painting. From 1904 onwards, he exhibited his work and was a member of the Association of Travelling Art Exhibitions (Peredvizhniki) (1912–1916), the Society of South Russian Artists (1906–1909) and the Association of Artists of Revolutionary Russia (1924–1926). In 1939, he became a member of the Union of Artists.
Gorelov worked in the genres of historical, battle, and portrait painting. In 1953, he was elected a Full Member of the USSR Academy of Arts and in 1950 he was awarded the Stalin Prize.
