signed in ink ‘Eduard Wiralt’ (lower right) and dated ‘1942’ (lower left) soft ground and dry point on wove paper sheet 54.5 x 43.7 cm. LITERATURE: Tallina Riiklik Art Museum. Ees6 NSV Kunst 1958: No 715 (ill. no 101). During the war-time in Estonia Wiiralt made mainly portraits, striving to express national character of the people. Ha has made a lot of drawings of a young lady, called Ada Sulling, but created on the basis of these drawings more generalized image of an Estonian woman in his portraits „Estonian Girl“ (1942, soft ground) and „Estonian Girl“ (1942, coloured aquatint). It is the image of a simple peasant woman, open and determined. The 2nd state of this work, made in Vienna (1944), is accomplished in the mixed technique of soft ground and dry point.
