The great Estonian engraver and draughtsman Eduard Wiiralt, who lived in Paris 1925 – 1939 and 1946 – 1954, made in 1937 two portraits of the American painter Martin Baer (1894 – 1961), who studied graphic techniques under his guidance. Another portrait, representing M.Baer with a book, has been engraved on 11th of Dec. 1937, directly on the plate, too. „Portrait of a Man“ is more generalized and far more expressive. The sketchy manner adds freshness to the image of a creative person.
After Wiiralt’s death the prints and drawings found in his studio have been in the possession of the Estonian Committee in Stockholm who gave most of them in 2006 to the Art Museum of Estonia and sold others, marking every print on the reverse with the stamp of the Estonian Committee.
