engraving on paper 43.4 x 31.8 cm Johann Heinrich Schmidt created this portrait four months before Alexander Suvorov's death and is the last portrait of the commander painted during his lifetime. The pastel was produced in Prague, where Suvorov stayed for a time before travelling to Russia after the Swiss expedition. The portrait by J.H. Schmidt has served as the basis for numerous reproductions and variants; the engravings by A.A. Frolov and N.I. Utkin are the best known of these.
