ALEXANDRE BENOIS (1870-1960) Set design for a throne room for 'Tsarevich Alexei'

Signed and dated ‘Alexandre Benois 1919’ (lower left) gouache, watercolour and ink on paper 36 x 64.5 cm executed in the 1920s 'Tsarevich Alexei' was a historical drama based on the novel by Russian Symbolist author Dmitry Merezhkovsky (1865-1941). Benois designed the costumes and décor for the production which was staged in Petrograd at the Bolshoi Drama Theater in 1920.
