Jean Varenne is a French Indologist specialising in Hinduism, Sanskrit, the Vedic cosmogonies and a wide range of subjects relating to Indian tradition and the religions of ancient Iran. Louis Renou (1896-1966) was one of the most important French Indianists of the twentieth century. The First World War forced him to interrupt his studies. He became an agrégé in 1920. Following his agrégation, he studied Sanskrit to become an Indianist. Charles Malamoud, born in 1929 in Chișinău (Moldavia), is a former French historian of religions, Orientalist and Indianist. A pupil of Madeleine Biardeau and Louis Renou, his work focused on the Veda and Brahmanic thought as a whole. Guy Albert Deleury (1922-2015) is an Indian scholar, specialist in Marathi literature, writer and translator specialising in India. He was a member of the Society of Jesus from 1943 to 1973.
