Postcard from the «Ross» publishing house, Berlin. 19/07/1955. 8,6 x 13,7 cm A complete artist, Chaplin was an actor, director, screenwriter, producer and composer, making him famous in Hollywood and one of the most influential comedians in the history of cinema. A leading burlesque actor in silent films thanks to his character of Charlie Chaplin (referred to simply as «the tramp» in the original versions), he first appeared on the silver screen in 1914, and four years later he was one of the world’s best-known personalities. In 1919, Chaplin co-founded the company «United Artists» with three other Hollywood pioneers (Douglas Fairbanks, Mary Pickford and D. W. Griffith) and thus gained full control over his work. He wrote, directed and produced most of his films, as well as acting and composing the music. Chaplin received many awards and distinctions, particularly at the end of his life. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II and made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1975, becoming «Sir Charles Chaplin».
