Questions of erudition concerning biblical history, with allusion to his article in the Methodical Encyclopedia, «Chronology of the twelve centuries before the passage of Xerses in Greece». Volney rationalist historian. His historical works are the logical continuation of Ruins and Travels through Egypt and Syria, and an attempt to apply the method he had defined in his History Lessons. He sought to go back as far as he could in antiquity, starting from a solid foundation well known to him, Egypt and Syria. In spite of their imperfections, these works, based on a rationalist approach, are the precursors of modern historiography. A Spanish officer, teacher and politician, Francisco Amorós (1770-1848) rose to a high position under Charles IV, which he lost under Ferdinand VII, and was one of the supporters of King Joseph Bonaparte, who made him a Councillor of State. Exiled in France at the end of the Empire, he became a naturalized citizen and founded gymnastics schools. He translated Volney’s famous book The Ruins into Spanish.
