The journal ‘Strelets’ was founded by Alexander Glezer in New York in 1984 under the imprint of the ‘Tret’ya volna’ (Third Wave) publishing house. ‘Strelets’ published authors such as Vladimir Maximov, Vladimir Voinovich, Georgy Vladimov, Joseph Brodsky, Genrikh Sapgir, Igor Kholin and others. As S. Yurenen put it, ‘there is something symbolic in the fact that the journal appeared in Orwell’s year of 1984. At that time aesthetic totalitarianism ruled Russian literature on both sides of the border. Anything unfamiliar was suppressed both at home and abroad. The anti-totalitarian, fundamentally pluralist democrat ‘Strelets’ cracked the concrete at a single stroke. The new literature, kept underground at home or doomed to foreign languages in emigration, was for the first time able to express itself in complete freedom in its native Russian’ (‘Strelets’, 1994, no. 2).
