Abram Monoszon was a Soviet and Russian painter whose work explores, among other themes, the memory of Jewish culture and the tragedy of the Holocaust. Born in Mogilev, in present-day Belarus, he was profoundly affected by the murder of his parents by the Nazis in 1941. This personal tragedy inspired his Holocaust series, in which he evokes the suffering, loss and remembrance of Jewish victims. Through his expressive painting style and richly textured surfaces, Monoszon bears witness to the destruction of Europe’s Jewish communities and preserves the memory of their tragic fate.
