signed in Cyrillic and dated ‘Graf Muravyov 1916’ (lower right) oil on canvas 50 × 69 cm Vladimir Leonidovich Muravyov (1861–1940) was a Russian painter and graphic artist born into the aristocratic Muravyov family. He studied as a non-matriculated student at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Mikhail Klodt and Julius Klever, whose romantic landscapes profoundly influenced his work. Convinced the Academy could teach him no more, he left before completing his studies and soon achieved both critical and commercial success with his atmospheric forest landscapes and hunting scenes. A passionate hunter himself, his works appealed to Russia’s aristocratic elite, including members of the Imperial family. Following the Revolution, he abandoned the aristocratic ‘Count Muravyov’ signature in favour of simply ‘Muravyov’, while continuing to paint the woodland and hunting subjects for which he was renowned. During the Civil War he worked as an artist with a Red Army unit in Rostov-on-Don before joining the Drama Theatre in 1922. His works are held in numerous regional museums in Russia and in private collections worldwide.
