The present ceramic bust is after Mark Antokolsky's celebrated portrait of Emperor Nicholas II, modelled in Paris in 1896 shortly after the Emperor's accession to the throne, one of the artist's most successful late imperial commissions.
Produced in several versions during the artist's lifetime, the composition was Executed in marble and bronze, with the marble version now in the collection of the State Russian Museum (inv. ПФ-78). Modelled shortly after Nicholas II's accession to the throne in 1894, the portrait captures the young emperor in the early years of his reign with the refined naturalism and psychological insight characteristic of Antokolsky's mature portrait sculpture. Signed in the model by the sculptor and bearing the incised mark of Emile Muller, the present ceramic version was produced by the highly regarded French manufacturer. It is known that Antokolsky collaborated with Muller, and there are other examples of their work together.
Of museum quality and exceptionally rare, it is one of the finest surviving ceramic versions of this iconic imperial portrait.
