Alfred Smith was a French Post-Impressionist painter whose work has often been compared to that of Claude Monet. Throughout his career, he embraced several stylistic developments. He first gained recognition for his atmospheric views of Bordeaux before turning increasingly to plein-air landscape painting, earning the nickname “the painter of the undergrowth.” Following a visit to Venice, his palette and brushwork adopted a more distinctly Impressionist character. From 1912 onwards, his work gradually evolved towards Fauvism.
