Metropolitan Peter (second half of the 13th century–1326) was one of the most important ecclesiastical and political figures of medieval Rus'. He played a decisive role in the rise of the Principality of Moscow and the formation of a centralized Russian state. His most significant achievement was the transfer of the metropolitan see from Vladimir to Moscow, firmly establishing the city's pre-eminence as the spiritual centre of Rus'. Spiritual adviser to the Grand Prince, builder, theologian and icon painter, Peter came to be revered as the first among the great hierarchs of Moscow. This large-scale icon of one of Russia's most venerated saints is executed to a high artistic standard and possesses considerable collector's appeal.
