Private collection, Europe Vladimir Stenberg was a leading figure of the Soviet avant-garde. The son of a Swedish artist who settled in Russia in 1898, he studied alongside his brother Georgii at the Stroganov School and later at the First State Free Art Studios, where, in 1920, they were among the first graduates to receive the title of ‘First Red Artists’. From their student years onward, the two brothers worked together, producing theatre and film sets, stage designs, and monument projects. Following the Revolution, they played an active role in the new regime’s monumental celebrations, designing temporary urban decorations and revolutionary monument proposals. Their bold use of geometric forms, modern typography, and asymmetrical compositions anticipated the Constructivist aesthetic for which they became renowned, before establishing themselves as the foremost designers of Soviet film posters in the 1920s.
