Solomon Moiseevich Gershov was one of the most distinctive figures of the Russian avant-garde. A painter and graphic artist, he studied under Marc Chagall, Kazimir Malevich and Pavel Filonov, and maintained a close friendship with Robert Falk. Working in a highly personal style, Gershov produced an extensive body of paintings and works on paper including still lifes, landscapes, portraits and imaginative composition, using gouache, tempera, watercolour and ink on a wide variety of supports. His works are held in the collections of the State Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow, the State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, the Mark Rothko Art Centre, Daugavpils, and museums and private collections worldwide.
