Valentin Sergeevich Smirnov was a Soviet painter born in Yaroslavl. He studied at the Yaroslavl Art School (graduated in 1948) and later at the Kyiv Art Institute (graduated in 1955), where he was taught by S. Grigoriev, K. Trokhimenko, and V. Kostecki. Working mainly in easel painting, he developed compositions characteristic of mid-20th-century Soviet art. From 1957 onward, Smirnov regularly participated in republican and all-Union exhibitions.
