Founder of the Theatre of Acting Mastery (1928–1938), he served as artistic director of the A.S. Pushkin Leningrad Drama Theatre from 1938 until his death in 1966; he was awarded the Stalin Prize (1951), named People’s Artist of the USSR (1954), and received the Order of Lenin in 1957. Dmitry Fedorovich Popov (1911–1988) was Soviet theatre and cinema artist, professor. He studied at the A.V. Lunacharsky Workers’ Faculty of Arts in Moscow and graduated from the I.E. Repin Institute in Leningrad in 1938 under M.P. Bobyshov. He worked at the Leningrad Drama and Comedy Theatre (1938–1940), was chief artist of the Russian Drama Theatre of the Karelo-Finnish SSR (1940–1941), and served as chief artist of the A.S. Pushkin Leningrad State Drama Theatre (1951–1973), while also collaborating with the Maly Drama Theatre, the Theatre for Young Spectators, the Lensoviet Theatre, the Theatre of Musical Comedy and the Gorky Bolshoi Drama Theatre.
