signed ‘A. FAVORY’ (lower left) oil on canvas 39 x 55 cm André Favory was a French painter associated with Post-Impressionism and the École de Paris. He is best known for his figurative works, often depicting nudes, rural scenes, and still lifes, rendered with a strong sense of volume and a distinctive use of colour and simplified forms. Trained initially at the Académie Julian in Paris, Favory was influenced by both Cézanne and the Cubist movement in his early career, though he later moved away from strict Cubist construction toward a more sensuous, expressive figuration. After serving in the First World War, his palette and style evolved significantly, becoming warmer and more robust, with an emphasis on sculptural modelling and earthy tones. During the 1920s, he achieved recognition within Parisian artistic circles and exhibited regularly at major Salons, including the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Tuileries. His works from this period often feature reclining female nudes and pastoral compositions, treated with a monumental, almost classical sense of structure. Favory’s later work reflects a synthesis of modernist simplification and traditional French figurative painting. He died relatively young in 1937, leaving a concise but highly distinctive body of work that continues to be appreciated for its balance between modernity and classical figuration.
