Occasional minor soiling to the binding. The novel was first published in the USSR in the journal ‘Moskva’ in 1966–1967 (nos. 11 and 1 respectively), with numerous censorship cuts and editorial alterations. In 1967, the first uncensored edition was issued in Paris by YMCA-Press; in 1969, a Frankfurt am Main edition presented the text in a unique form, with the censored passages set in italics. A pocket-format issue in leatherette binding.
