Vasili Levi worked as a lawyer in Saint Petersburg for sixteen years before emigrating to Finland after the Russian Revolution. There he turned fully to painting, working in close association with Ilya Repin, and organized exhibitions presenting both Repin’s works and his own in Finland and other Nordic countries. Drawing on the artistic foundations he developed under Repin’s influence and the example of Munich Impressionism, Levi’s paintings offer vivid interpretations of their subjects, characterized by lively narrative expression.
