After the untimely death of his wife, Ivan Shishkin wrote in response to condolences from one of his friends: ‘If you had seen all her albums, drawings, sketches and unfinished paintings, you would have been overcome with indescribable delight – neither we in the past nor any artist today could have dreamed of what she accomplished!’
