They believed that this would allow them to isolate Crimea from Russia and prevent the supply of weapons and food. On 12 (24) May 1855, an Anglo-French fleet of 57 ships, 11 floating batteries and several dozen small vessels entered the Kerch Strait. It carried 16,000 troops.
