In the spring of 1855, as the Crimean War was already in its second year, the British and French decided to launch an operation in the Sea of Azov. They believed that this would allow them to isolate Crimea from Russia and prevent the supply of weapons and food.
On 12 (24) May 1855, an Anglo-French fleet of 57 ships, 11 floating batteries and several dozen small vessels entered the Kerch Strait. It carried 16,000 troops.
