PAIR OF ICONS ‘SAINT SIMON THE CANAANITE’ AND ‘SAINT MATTHEW THE APOSTLE’ Mstera, late 19th century

Lotto 199
1 4001 800
Wood, levkas, gold leaf, tempera 53.2 x 26.3 cm (each) Condition: overall good condition, no paint layer on the margins. Vertical crack on the icon of Saint Simon. Icons from the Deesis row of the iconostasis are of considerable interest to collectors. Minor losses do not distort the aesthetics of the ‘high’ iconographic style, which is based on exquisite miniature writing, elongated proportions of figures, a bright colour palette, masterful execution of details and ‘personal’ elements.
