302, II p., 1 p. of maps; 23x16 cm. Composite period binding, calico spine. Good condition. Scratches on the edges of the covers. Engraved bookplate by Martin Winkler, designed by A. Kravchenko, on the flyleaf. One of the first works by Russian historians devoted to the Kazan Khanate, whose history in the works of outstanding historians of the previous generation was considered exclusively in the context of Russian history. Khudyakov’s view differed from that of previous authors in that he sympathized with the Tatar people and portrayed the policies of the Muscovite state as aggressive and colonial. At the same time, he strove to maintain scientific objectivity. Mikhail Georgievich Khudyakov was a Soviet archaeologist and researcher of the history and culture of the peoples of the Volga region. His main works are devoted to the history of the Tatars, Volga Bulgaria, and the archaeology of Kazan. First edition. A great rarity on the antiquarian market. Provenance: Martin Winkler (1893-1982) – German cultural and art historian, professor, specialist in ancient Russian art, member of the German Society for the Study of Eastern Europe.
