Work on the ‘Essay’ began and was largely completed in Saratov, where the thirty-year-old adjunct professor of Russian history at Kiev University had been exiled for his involvement in the Cyril and Methodius Society. In 1862, the ‘Essay’ received an honourable mention from the Imperial Academy of Sciences. Rare.
