ABRAHAM WALKOWITZ (1878-1965) Isadora Duncan dancing

Walkowitz' (lower right and lower left) watercolour and ink on paper 18 х 7 сm, 35 х 21.5 сm, 18 х 7 сm Isadora Duncan was the quintessential modernist, throwing off the rigid shackles of ballet form and exploring movement through a combination of classical sculpture and her own inner sources. For Duncan, dance was a highly personal expression of beauty through movement, and she argued that the ability to produce such movement was intrinsically contained within the body. Abraham Walkowitz was one of the many artists captivated by this new form of movement. He met Isadora Duncan in Paris, in Auguste Rodin's studio, and she became his favourite model for many years, because of the similarities between their artistic ideals and aesthetics. The drawings were a good representation of the main characteristic of Isadora's dance: easily artistic, but not static.
