Saint John Cassian the Roman, born around 360 in Scythia Minor and died in Marseille in 435, was a Mediterranean Christian monk who had a profound influence on the beginnings of the Church in Provence in the 5th century. He was the founder of the Abbey of Saint-Victor in Marseille. He left an important doctrinal work that established a bridge between Eastern and Western monasticism.
