signed and numbered 'E. NEIZ 2/8' (in the bronze) bronze, marble base H. 33 cm, L. 27 cm Edition 2/8 ‘Step’ is a artwork from the series ‘War is...’, associated with the Ernst Neizvestny's memories of the Second World War. The bronze sculpture ‘Step’ depicts a figure with legs that are hypertrophied, massive and unbearably heavy. The artist has created a visual metaphor for the extreme fatigue of a man exhausted by hardship, trying to take one more step, perhaps to save his life. As if answering the question posed in the title of the series of works, the artist expresses in the sculpture an idea that is close to his heart: war is first and foremost suffering and pain. It is a reminder of the value of human life and the need to prevent such tragedies in the future.
