signed in Cyrillic 'Pasternak' (lower left) watercolour, pencil on paper 37.3 x 28 cm (à vue) Leonid Osipovich Pasternak (1862–1945) was a Russian Impressionist painter and illustrator, known for his affiliation with the Peredvizhniki and Union of Russian Artists. Born in Odessa to an Orthodox Jewish family, he studied at the Grekov Odessa Art School, Moscow University, and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. A friend of Leo Tolstoy, Pasternak painted numerous portraits of the writer and illustrated War and Peace and Resurrection.
