Prince Chernyshev informs Mr Andrr Marchand that His Majesty has granted him two privileges relating to the introduction of a new method of peat coking in Russia. The Emperor approves the project for installing the relevant apparatus in St Petersburg the following spring. His Imperial Majesty considers that steam power would be preferable to water as a motive force and sees no better place for the enterprise than the vicinity of Strelna. Prince Alexander Ivanovich Chernyshev (1786–1856) was a prominent Russian military commander, intelligence officer, aide-de-camp general, and Minister of War. On the eve of the Patriotic War of 1812, he served as military-diplomatic envoy of the Russian Empire at the court of Napoleon I. He held the post of Minister of War for twenty-five years and was one of the most influential military figures of his time. Alexander Ivanovich Chernyshev (1786-1856) was a Russian military and statesman, intelligence officer, adjutant general, and cavalry general. On the eve of the Patriotic War of 1812, he was a military-diplomatic agent of the Russian government at the court of French Emperor Napoleon I; for 25 years he served as Minister of War.
