The Memoirs of M. de Bourrienne, written by himself, edited by M. de Villemarest and published from 1829 to 1831 in 10 volumes, revealed a great number of interesting details about Napoleon’s youth, his relationship with Josephine, the Directory and the Consulate, etc.
While often criticized for containing fabrications and embellishments, the work retains significant historical interest and was one of the earliest and most influential posthumous portraits of the Emperor.
