Mamère had undertaken to pay you sixty thousand francs over two years. I see from your letter that you have already received thirty-six thousand (...). I have given orders that the debts left by my poor mother, and they are many, be settled as quickly as possible (...). The prince informs her that he will pay her the balance during the course of 1814. Eugène Rose de Beauharnais (1781-1824), member of the French Imperial family. Born from the first marriage of Marie-Joseph-Rose de Tascher de la Pagerie (known as Joséphine de Beauharnais, first wife of Emperor Napoleon I from 1796 to 1809), he was officially adopted by Napoleon in 1806. He had a brilliant military career before being appointed viceroy of Italy. He was one of Napoleon’s most loyal and talented subordinates, who made him general-in-chief. He commanded the IV Corps during the Russian campaign. His loyalty to the Emperor earned him the respect of all. After Waterloo, he took refuge in Munich, where his father-in-law named him Duke of Leuchtenberg, and he devoted himself to his estates.
