This exquisite miniature depicts an aristocratic lady half-reclining in nature, against a backdrop of woods and a river. She is wearing an Empire-style dress with a high waist and thin sleeves, typical of the Napoleon I period. The delicacy of the facial features, the transparency of the fabrics, the grace of the pose and the liveliness of the landscape underline the artist's skill and the model's high status. The gilded frame is adorned with decorative superimpositions in the form of rocaille and foliage scrolls, giving the composition as a whole a particular solemnity.
Joséphine Beauharnais was often depicted in a romantic setting, with elements of nature and in a free pose, emphasising her gentleness, grace and taste.
