A skilled tactician and exceptional leader of men, he was particularly noted for his bravery in battle, being wounded almost 35 times. Esteemed by Napoleon, who described him as 'the Bayard of the French army, without fear or reproach', he was for a long time commander of Oudinot's famous grenadier division, within Lannes' corps. Nicknamed the 'infernal column', this elite division made a decisive contribution to many of the Grande Armée's victories, including those at Friedland and Bautzen.
